When we were trying to decide between the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, the Dyson Airwrap, and other more affordable hair dryer brands, we ultimately went with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. Now, we find ourselves reviewing a hair dryer while our partner watches the FIFA World Cup. There’s so much hype around Dyson for hair, and we wondered what makes Dyson so special besides the technology, futuristic design, and being famous for its vacuums.
Although we love the sleek look of a good blowout, the main reason we don’t like to blowdry our hair is because of the cumulative damage it would cause to our already very damaged hair. The Dyson hair dryer promised to prevent heat damage through its ability to dry hair faster. However, the question remains: is a hair dryer worth $429 when traditional ones cost less than $100, and how is the Dyson cost justified? We figured we could find out, and if we didn’t like the Dyson Supersonic, we could always return it within the return policy deadline.
Why we decided to make a Dyson review?
In this Dyson hair dryer review, we’ll share the good and the bad, and explain why we don’t think the majority of people should buy the Dyson Supersonic. However, we will say that it’s the kind of gift that would impress your mother-in-law.
We chose the Dyson hair dryer over the Dyson Airwrap because the Airwrap doesn’t fully dry your hair and is mainly focused on styling. If we bought the Airwrap, we’d have one more styling tool to add to our collection but would still need a hair dryer.
We also opted for the black version because it looks more chic than the silver one. Additionally, our partner could use it when he needs to blow dry his hair.
We considered buying a refurbished Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, which was $100 cheaper than the regular one. However, we ultimately decided to go with the regular hair dryer because of the warranty. The Dyson warranty typically lasts two years, but for refurbished products, it only lasts one year. We also noticed that Amazon offers refurbished Dyson products, but we’re not sure about their warranty policy
Dyson Supersonic Benefits
Here are the key features of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, broken down into easy-to-read snippets:
- Bladeless design
- Uses the Dyson Digital Motor V9, which spins up to 110,000rpm, propelling 13 liters of air up to the amplifier every second
- Utilizes the Coanda effect to attract hair to surfaces through jet-propelled streams of air
- Prevents hair damage with intelligent heat control technology that measures airflow temperature over 40 times per second
- Air Multiplier technology creates high-velocity jets of air, allowing for quicker drying than traditional hair dryers
- Five magnetic attachments for easy switching in and out
- Flyaway attachment eliminates the need to use a hair straightener separately
- Suitable for all hair types
- 3 heat settings and 4 speed settings
- Smaller in size than traditional hair dryers.
The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer comes with five different attachments:
- Gentle air attachment: diffuses air in a gentle and cooler stream of air. Ideal for sensitive scalps and thinner hair.
- Diffuser: a larger attachment designed for curly or wavy hair. Mimics natural air-drying by dispersing air across a wider surface area.
- Wide-tooth comb: designed for type 4c hair.
- Styling concentrator: used for a precision blowout. Allows for styling and drying smaller sections of hair with a precise stream of air.
- Flyaway attachment: used after hair is dry to smooth out any flyaways and frizzy hair, giving an extra sleek effect.
Dyson Supersonic hair dryer
There are a couple of things you should know about the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. Firstly, you need to clean the filter once a month to ensure that you are taking care of the product and prolonging its life. Both the outer filter cage and the inner filter mesh need to be wiped down regularly with a dry cloth. Additionally, although I was happy with the magnetic attachments, the magnets are quite strong, making them a bit difficult to pull apart. It takes some getting used to, but eventually, it becomes easier.
While the Dyson technology surpassed my expectations, it didn’t do so well in the noise department. Unfortunately, it might be a while before silent hair dryers become a reality. The third and most potent setting on the Dyson hair dryer is quite loud, while the second setting is much more tolerable for my ears.
How to Properly Use the Dyson Hair Dryer
Using the Dyson hair attachments can be a bit of a learning process, but it’s worth it to maximize the results from your Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. Here are some tips on how to use each attachment:
- Diffuser: Use it for the bulk of the hair drying process. It’s ideal for curly or wavy hair because it mimics natural air-drying by dispersing air across a wider surface area.
- Styling concentrator: Use it at the very end to give your hair a precision blowout. It’s great for styling and drying smaller sections of hair with a precise stream of air.
- Flyaway attachment: Use it after your hair is dry to smooth out any flyaways and frizzy hair for an extra sleek effect.
To properly use the Dyson hair dryer:
- Point the nozzle away from the scalp.
- Place it around half an inch from the hair.
If you have time and want to look extra snatched, use the flyaway attachment. Start just shy of your roots and go down the lengths. You’ll find that it gives you a more sleek, shiny finish. The Dyson flyaway attachment has the most effect when used on the highest setting.
The highest speed setting of the Dyson can be a tad too strong to be used comfortably for the entire blow dry process. We recommend using the 2nd setting, but if you want to take advantage of the Dyson’s power, use the 3rd setting sparingly. Ironically, if the Dyson team had made the 3rd speed just a little less powerful, it may have also made it less noisy.
Why should you buy Dyson Hair Dryer?
The Dyson hair dryer makes sense for anyone who is looking for a high-end hair dryer that offers advanced technology, fast and efficient drying, and multiple styling options. It’s especially suitable for people with all hair types, including curly or wavy hair, and those who are concerned about hair damage. The various attachments allow for precise styling, and the flyaway attachment can replace the need for a hair straightener. Additionally, if you’re someone who values sleek and modern design, the Dyson hair dryer’s bladeless and compact design may be attractive.
However, it’s worth noting that the Dyson hair dryer is a significant investment and may not be suitable for those on a budget. the price of the Dyson Hair Dryer ranged from around $399 to $449 USD, depending on the model and any current promotions or discounts. Prices may vary based on location and currency exchange rates. It’s always best to check with the manufacturer or authorized retailers for the most up-to-date pricing information.
