Our Mission

Our mission is to gather the opinions of all those who love Shimokitazawa and integrate them to the development of the area.

The Shimokitazawa, aka "Shimokita", is an area which encompasses new and old, urban and bucolic, and uptown and old town. It is known for its unique and ever changing urban culture. It is a labyrinthine wonder town inspiring dramas, literature, fashion, and arts. The area acquired its appeal throughout many years of incremental development.

We believe that Shimokitazawa should be developed in the respect of its character. We fear that the current governmental redevelopment plan will destroy the charm of the neighborhood. This is why we ask the administration to reconsider it.

Our demands to the government are:

(1) Halt the city project of the Route 54

(between the Ring Rord 7 and the Sub Rord 24)

(2) Reexamine the simultaneous construction of the District Road 10 and Rotary Plaza

(3) Shift policy toward renovative town planning instead of the large scale destruction of existing towns

The redevelopment plan includes the construction of a large road (1) and a rotary plaza and Street 10 (2). Route 54 would divide the neigorhood and wipe away small shops; Street 10 and a rotary would generate heavy traffic and high buildings into the area.

We consider that these redevelopment plans should be thoroughly discussed between the administration, residents and other Shimokita-lovers, and alternative plans suiting the various actors should be examined.

The culture and life of "Shimokita" are created and nourished by residents and the many exciting aspects of Shimokitazawa. Saving the charms of Shimokitazawa should be a common goal not only for those who live here, but also for all those who love this unique area.
